Best For You

The Smile app is Best For You’s app of the month for February 2024.

A graphic introducing the app of the month: Smile. There’s an image of a phone with lines coming out of it to form an arrow shape. There’s also the Smile logo: the word 'Smile' in a blue-to-pink gradient, with a smile shape emerging from the 'm'.
About Smile

The Smile app helps people with chronic physical health conditions manage their wellbeing using five evidence-based approaches.

The app has content based on different approaches because different things feel right for different people.

It uses self-compassion and self-care, mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and emotional regulation.

On Smile, you’ll find content about common challenges like coming to terms with a diagnosis, medical appointments, or change of identity, as well as content based around different emotions. Smile offers content in written, audio, and video formats.

Before you start, you can see which approach the content is based on, what format the content uses, and how long it takes to go through it.

You can favourite content you want to come back to later, and every piece of content also has space for you to add any thoughts and reflections.

You can choose to skip the information about joining their premium community and just use the free content and features available.

There are also blogs, where people can share their experiences, for example, of navigating work with health conditions or travelling with a chronic health condition.

Finally, you can track your mood over time and keep ‘smile files’ – notes (including space for photos) about positive moments in your day, no matter how small.

Two screenshots from the Smile app. The first shows the five evidence-based approaches it uses: self-compassion, mindfulness, investigate your feelings, love and let go, and emotional regulation. The second screenshot shows some of the specific topics the app covers including caring for someone, change of identity, coming to terms with a diagnosis, coping with difficult experiences, trouble sleeping, and impact on wider life.

About the Best For You app library

There are thousands of apps that claim to boost wellbeing, but it can be difficult to know which ones you can trust with your mental health and wellbeing.

Best For You worked with ORCHA (the Organisation for the Review of Care and Health Apps) to create the Best For you app library. Every app in the library has been tested to make sure the information it contains is accurate – and that the app is safe and trustworthy too.

You can search the library for specific apps to see if they’ve been reviewed. You can also search by condition (for example, depression) or symptom (for example, feeling anxious) – and you can search for apps to support with specific things, for example, meditation or mindfulness. The library also has lists of top-rated apps for various topics. Find previous apps of the month on the Best For You website.

You can filter the apps shown, for example, to only show apps that will work on your device or to only show apps that are totally free.
