Mental health books for children

Last updated: 10 February 2026
The title ‘Reading well for children’ is in a thought bubble above an illustrated book full of brightly coloured stars and sparkles. A banner says ‘Free at your library’. The image has the logo of The Reading Agency. Around the edge are doodles, including a megaphone, lightbulb, and pencil.

The Reading Agency (a national charity who help people ‘read their way to a better life’) have put together a list of mental health books for children.

Leading health professionals worked with children, families, carers, and librarians to choose and recommend over 30 books. The list is for children aged between about 7 and 11 – there are books for a wide range of reading levels.

The list of books covers topics including healthy minds, feelings, worries, coping with grief, dealing with tough times, the world around you, and having certain diagnoses (including ADHD, autism, OCD, and dyslexia).

The government Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport has paid for every library service across England to have the books on the list to support wellbeing.
